With the introduction of cartridges in the late 1860s there were suddenly three ways to set up a percussion revolver -- send it to the factory to have it converted to use cartridges, have a local gunsmith do it, or keep it restricted to loose powder, lead balls and percussion caps.
Today's cowboy shooters have some of the same choices with the availability of an increasing number of models of the Kirst Konverter. The Kirst Konverters are designed to work with both Uberti and Pietta reproductions of the 1849 Colt, the 1851/61 Colt Navy, the 1858 Remington, and the Ruger Old Army. The Thuer conversion unit is expected in 2008.
